Rubrics Writing

If you are reading a material and you see red paint or ink used as supplements in document whether in the form of instructions or text to highlight sections or words. This is called rubrics writing and can be in printed or written formats. The color that will be used for the most part would be red, however other colors were in use from the late medieval periods to present time; this is still referred to as rubrics.

In past years, the priest would use this method to explain what he was doing for liturgical service in the prayer or any other service books that he would be using. The sections that were not highlighted would be spoken out loud; this was the original black text. The history of this style of writing is of great significance to many scholars and has caused some controversy in services. Many of the theologians tried to distinguish between the writing they considered to be of human origin to that of the divine source. There was even arguments that rubrics first started as a verbal format and then separate volumes were made later in the written format.

Studies were done and there are evidence which shows that written versions had existed in some of the earlier service books. The service books that are used in modern times, especially in the Roman Catholic books, you will find issues such as the order of service and basics for how the service would be conducted; highlighted in red rubrics. The red rubrics are also used by specific persons involved in the service, for example couples getting married or to distinguish the words of the priest and the worshippers.

In the 1900, the red letter of the King James Version of the Bible integrated the red highlights. This was done to distinguish the words that were spoken by Jesus in his mortal ministry; therefore this translation did not have quotation marks. In later years additional versions were made of the bible and they implemented similar practices.
Some years later when printing became popular other effects were added to highlight text or words. It was now easier when typing to use italics, bold, different font sizes to emphasized sections of the text. However, this has faded out the use of rubrics writing somewhat as to print in different colors are very expensive and some would say time consuming. There are still materials that are using the red rubrics such as religious service books, luxury editions or any other books that this design would be better emphasized.

In recent years, rubrics have become a popular scoring tool that is used in academics. This is being used extensively by teachers or instructors to help especially with grading papers. It is commonly used to focus on the measuring of behavior, performance or quality; to rate a range of performances and contains specific characteristics that is set in different levels to indicate the degree to which a standard is maintained.
Since the 80’s, rubrics writing is presented in graphic format, this is usually in grids. Based on studies that were conducted it is believed that this is more effective than a text based materials in certain criteria.
